Tis Returns to Italy! Day 73: Blissfully Beautiful Baroque Surprise

Today I was treated to a stunning Baroque surprise.

Basilica of Santa Croce in Lecce Italy

Recovering

Today I woke up exhausted. I’ve spent 2 ½ months spent far exceeding my usual daily step count regularly. The icing on the cake was my 2-hour round trip walk to the stadium and back yesterday for the Lecce – Parma football game.

This morning I decided I would make my breakfast, bring it back to bed, and spend the morning here resting and catching up on work. My comfy bishop’s chapel bedroom with the ironic angels on the headboard was the perfect place to recover.

After some much-needed rest, I headed out for a short walk. My only plan was to head toward an area of town I had not explored, wander for a little and then find an outside table for a cup of tea or glass of wine. I walked to the main square and headed down a random side street.

Baroque Surprise

As I walked down this new street, I arrived in a piazza, standing in front of the most beautiful church I think I’ve ever seen. The baroque bliss that is Lecce is stunning to behold and easily found all over this beautiful city. However, to stand here in front of the Basilica of Santa Croce, felt like baroque on steroids.

The basilica dominates the piazza, but in a shy way. As you enter the square, the facade of the church is located in a corner, as if trying to hide. This allows it to sneak up on you and overwhelm you with its beauty.

I lost track of time as I lingered there, enjoying the view of the church from every possible angle.

Still in Appreciative Awe

Despite being travel-weary at times, I still find myself overwhelmed by all the experiences I am lucky enough to enjoy on this journey. My time here has not jaded me. I am still incredibly grateful for my opportunity to explore this country that I love and take advantage of my time in each little corner.

Ciao for now!
