Tis Returns to Italy! Day 28: Gelato and Sunsets

Today started off well! Woke up in my own bed, realizing I’d made the right decision by not accepting the kind Italian man’s offer last night of “just going for a walk, no touching” after he told me he was married but found me “molto interessante”. For me, chatting with him was a chance to practice my Italian with someone who cannot speak English. For him, it was a chance to take a bit of a break from his wife.

I worked straight through the morning and afternoon, only stopping to reheat a slice of leftover salami pizza (THREE types of salami and ham!) for lunch. 😋 At some point late in the day, I realized I was starving. So I did the only thing I could. I shut the computer down and headed out for some gelato.

A quick google search of “best Gelato in Genova” lead me to a new location, U Gelato du Caruggiu, which I had not tried. I wonder if it says something about me that I always seem to be living within 3-4 blocks of the best gelato… To accurately and fairly “test the quality” of this so-called best gelato in Italy, I tried my favorite combo of chocolate and cherry. They were correct. It is the best gelato in town. Creamy and great flavors. Perfection.

After Sunset in Boccadasse

Afterward, I tried to cook chicken piccata, giving my new kitchen here in Genova its first trial. The induction stove defeats me every time! There is always something I cannot figure out. Who knew your pan could be too big for the eye? Everyone but me? Okay, I admit when I am beaten.

After seeing Boccadasse, the very small and extremely quaint and cute beach town Sunday afternoon, I knew I had to go at sunset. So I took the short bus ride there for a drink by the beach. I did a quick work call from my perch by the sea, sharing a quick peek at my view with everyone back home just starting their days. Afterward, I stopped to watch the end of the Genoa – Bologna football (I can no longer call it soccer) game with two locals.

It was a tense game, which ignited my two fellow viewers into yelling at the TV. I learned new ways to share your displeasure with the game! For instance, you can insult the other team by criticizing their local pasta. In this instance, there was quite a bit of “You think your tagliatelle with your bolognese sauce is the best? Come try my trofie pasta with the pesto of Genova!!! Pronunciation note: You must really drag out the word “tag-li-a-tel-le” in a mocking tone while looking as if you smell something foul for best effect.

Ciao for now!
