Singing for the Love of Pizza at La Pazzeria in Bari, Italy

At the end of my street here in Bari’s Old Town, is a nondescript pizza joint called “La Pazzeria”. Yes, that is spelled correctly. “Pazzo” in Italian means “crazy”. If the people working here are crazy, then I would like to be crazy also.

“Crazy” Moments

At night, with the right motivation, the workers who are busy making and delivering pizzas, break into song. They only need a receptive crowd to motivate them. I visited this delightful place a couple of times as it had really good pizza and provides, what is in my opinion, some first-class entertainment. On my first visit, I was sat next to a gay couple. Suddenly, one of the workers broke into song. They sing really loudly and very well.

A couple started dancing. One of my two friends at the next table asked if I would dance with him as his partner was still eating. Then another couple joined. Suddenly the place was full of all good things in life, food, wine, dance, and song.

I had a front-row seat to this show several times. When the tables start to fill, or when they simply have a receptive audience, one worker will start singing. Soon, another will join. Customers who are locals, add their voices.

Did I mention they all sing very well?

The Secret to the Crazy Moments

One night I was seated next to two women who live in Bari. They explained that everyone comes not only for the pizza but also for the show. Both are important.

What makes this place truly special, is the way the locals and tourists are all welcomed and all join in the fun. Many places that work with tourists, do not always maintain a positive attitude when work gets busy. Here they seem to thrive on it and truly enjoy what they are doing.

What they have here is not easily replicated.

If you ever have the chance, stop by La Pazzeria and hope the right motivation is present to create a crazy moment.

Ciao for now!
